History of Hemp

Hemp's role in history has been a long one, and was once absolutely vital to world commerce. For centuries, bibles were printed on hemp paper. The Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution were printed on hemp paper. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were hemp farmers, and at that time, it was illegal not to grow hemp. Great Britain mandated that each landowner grow hemp, as it was so vital to world commerce. Hemp was used for rope and sails on the ships that crossed the ocean to arrive in America. Historically, it has been used for paper, cloth, rope, food and fuel. Until 1937 it was legal to grow hemp in the United States, until Congress passed the Marijuana Tax act, designed to prohibit the use of marijuana as a drug. Consequently, this made the farming of industrial hemp illegal as well.

*	Hemp paper has a significantly longer life span compared to wood pulp paper (1,500 versus 50-70 years).
*	Plastic made from hemp cellulose is biodegradable.
*	Hemp is a quickly renewable resource in comparison to trees. Hemp has an average growth period of four months whereas trees take from seven to forty years to reach harvestable age.
*	Ten to twenty times more paper can be generated from an acre of hemp plants than an acre of trees over a 20 year period.
